Strategies for Classroom Management

STEP ONE: Review the summary of key strategies that follows:

Key Strategies for Classroom Management

  1. Create an Effective Learning Environment

    • Establish routines and expectations from the first week of school.
    • Arrange the classroom to facilitate teacher mobility.
    • Set clear expectations and high standards for student success.
    • Create a welcoming atmosphere by learning students' names and engaging them from day one.
  2. Establish Classroom Procedures

    • Define and model daily routines, such as entering the classroom, asking for help, and submitting assignments.
    • Use visual reminders (posters, diagrams) to reinforce expectations.
    • Maintain consistency in enforcing procedures to prevent chaos.
  3. Create a Motivational Environment

    • Make learning engaging by using students’ work to decorate the classroom.
    • Teach at an appropriate challenge level—not too easy, not too hard.
    • Use positive reinforcement and praise students in ways that build confidence.
    • Incorporate different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic).
  4. Make Every Minute Count

    • Start and end class on time.
    • Prepare clear lesson objectives and write them down before class.
    • Implement “bell work” (short, focused activities) to engage students immediately.
    • Have backup plans in case lessons finish early to prevent students from becoming distracted.
  5. Keep Everyone Engaged

    • Use strategies to involve all students in discussions.
    • Encourage students to think critically and respond thoughtfully.
    • Use varied questioning techniques (e.g., "echo technique," peer questioning, choral responses).
    • Implement interactive activities such as beanbag games and student-led discussions.
  6. Teach Life Skills and Good Learning Habits

    • Incorporate character-building activities (e.g., responsibility, cooperation, perseverance).
    • Encourage students to take ownership of their learning.
    • Teach study skills (e.g., note-taking, organization, memory techniques).
    • Reinforce time management and personal accountability.
  7. Be Creative with Limited Resources

    • Adapt and repurpose available materials for teaching.
    • Use local and online resources to supplement learning.
    • Foster a collaborative learning environment with peer-to-peer teaching.
  8. Use Project Design and Management Techniques

    • Approach classroom management like a project, with clear goals, collaboration, and evaluation.
    • Regularly monitor and adjust strategies based on student needs.
    • Celebrate classroom successes to motivate students.
STEP TWO: Imagine you are preparing for your first week of teaching. Outline a brief classroom management plan that includes:
  • One rule you would establish and how you would communicate it.
  • One procedure you would implement and how you would teach it.
  • One method you would use to create a positive and motivational classroom environment.

  1. Compositions should be handed in time and on a separate piece of paper, copying the topic, then providing the plan and finally the composition. So, after having explained thoroughly providing examples in class I would offer further assistance if needed.

    1. In my classroom, I will establish the rule of staying silent when required, such as during tests. To reinforce this, I will use a simple hand signal instead of shouting, setting a good example for students to follow. For procedures, I will implement a quiet entry routine where students walk in and take their seats calmly so the class can begin immediately without wasting time. This will be taught through practice and repetition. To keep students motivated, I will create a reward system in which those who follow the silence rule earn small rewards (e.g. stickers).

  2. One rule I would establish is that students are allowed to doodle or fiddle during class if that helps them concentrate. One procedure I would implement is that each lesson will begin with something creative like a song or a story from which the students will learn the vocabulary and grammar throughout the class. I will refer to the song or any creative means I use throughout the class. One method I would use is that students working on the creative part, the song for example will be asked to change the lyrics as we collectively work on it in order to acquire vocabulary.

  3. I would establish the rule
"Respect Everyone and Everything in the Classroom."
The way I would communicate it is the following: On the first day, I would hold a class discussion about respect. Together, we would create a classroom “Respect Agreement” poster with student contributions, which we would display prominently as a reminder.

The procedure to implement would be the following:
"Entering the Classroom Routine." I would model the routine by demonstrating how to enter quietly, greet the teacher, and begin “bell work” that will be displayed on the board. We would practice the routine several times together, offering positive feedback and corrections as needed. Visual cues near the door would serve as reminder.

Lastly, the method I would use to create a positive and motivational classroom environment would be by
Celebrating the students' work and achievements. I would create a “Star Student Wall” where students’ work, achievements (both big and small), and positive behaviors would be displayed. I would regularly highlight student contributions during lessons, use positive reinforcement, and incorporate activities that align with students’ interests and learning styles to make lessons engaging and meaningful.

  4. If I were to teach in a classroom during my first week, I would incentivise accurate description of the course material. Then, I would carry out the lesson by creating a brief lesson plan or outline adhering to the time available before each lesson. Lastly, I would try to guide each student through new knowledge in accordance to their past knowledge and experiences and try to do so in a fun and engaging way, with lots of humour and roleplay.

  5. To help create an orderly classroom environment in the first week we would all agree on up to five basic behaviour rules and create a poster as a visual aid to help them remember and implement them.
To save time when assigning homework I would employ a specific procedure and which I would follow consistently, so they would always know how to access the instructions, materials and how to submit it, even the expected penalty for non submission.
To provide positive motivation, I would use positive reinforcement and refrain from negative comments, that is by acknowledging their contribution and perspective and building on it to lead them to the correct answer.

  6. One rule I would establish would be that students need to raise their hand to speak. I would communicate it right at the start of the school year to make sure each students know they have the opportunity to participate and have a voice if they respect everyone else. One procedure I would implement is self-assessment by students after each activity. I would teach it by having students reply to a couple of self-assessment questions to give them the habit of doing it by themselves. One method I would use would be to clearly divide time during lessons for different types of activities to create a rhythm that is familiar for students.

  7. One rule would be to raise hands to talk and would practice by permitting students who raised their hands to talk. One procedure would be how and when to handle homework tasks and one method would be to come up with sentences using new vocabulary

  8. - I would use positive reinforcement in case they make a mistake and encourage them to continue trying until they manage to correct themselves, if possible, and praise students in ways that build confidence whether their attempts were successful or not because at least they tried
    - I would foster a collaborative learning environment with peer-to-peer teaching, by assigning them projects where they can work in pairs or in small groups even. Additionally, if a student got a question wrong, I would choose another student to answer the same question rather than answering it myself.
    - I would create name tags for them that they can place on their desks, and in this way generate a welcoming atmosphere by learning students' names and engaging them from day one.

  9. One rule I would establish is being quiet and I would try to impress to the students the idea that that would be the only way for them to understand the material.
One procedure would be that the lesson would always end with us revising what we did on that class and what they have for homework and I would impose that by doing it consistently every time at the end of class.
One method I would use to make a positive and motivational environment would be to establish free communication at all time with no judgement.

  10. ~ Establish routines orally and in written form, both in visual and auditory form
~ "How to ask for help": phrase different ways in which one could formulate a question. Then, give Ss a general topic unknown to them, as an example, and let them elaborate on their questions
~ Introducing a task: adopt to different types of learners, by distributing the task in various forms. For ex., drama for kinesthetic types, crafts or drawing for the visual (less verbal) ones (this could help out the shy ones as well) e.tc.

  11. The rule I would establish is that students need to be able to finish talking before another student can start talking. The procedure I would establish is that students will have to raise their hand and wait to take the floor. The method I would establish is trying to seem friendly and approachable in order to help students feel comfortable and appreciated.

  12. One rule I would establish would be cooperation within students to accomplish task and overall engagement in classroom activities.
By implementing gamification and role play the students would participate actively. For example, to enhance their speaking skills I would pair them into small groups creating a scenario to eager them to start a conversation.
By these methods and the constant feedback, I would create a positive and motivational classroom where I would influence students to believe in their skills and themselves by acknowledging their work.

  13. Rule: Respect others and our classroom. I would introduce this rule on the first day by discussing what respect looks like
Procedure: Asking for help. I would introduce a simple, clear system for students to request help without disrupting the class(for example using a silent signal)
Method: Recognizing Effort and Growth. I would frequently celebrate milestones, big or small, to obtain a supportive classroom culture

  14. I would start the lesson by giving students the chance to introduce themselves. One rule i would establish is to respect their classmates and the learning enviroment by working collaboratively to create a list with examples of how they will show their respect. One procedure i would follow is to give them 2 minutes after they will enter the class to relax and then i will start the lesson withoyt any interruptions except for bathroom breaks. One method i would follw is to give positive reinforment after their responses to the activities even though they are not completely correct.

  15. The rule I would establish during my first week of teaching is that everyone should respect each other and for that no one should speak without raising their hand or be addressed.
One procedure I would implement is starting and finishing our lesson on a specific time so everyone could be on time and feel like part of a team that does serious work.
The method I would use to create a positive environment is encouraging the students to do some arts and crafts with their own hands and create something to decorate our classroom, in that way they would feel more comfortable and welcomed at the place.

  16. One rule that could be established concerns every student that comes late in the classroom. The student has to knock on the door and say in English "May I come in? ". A teaching procedure that would take place in every lesson is taking attendance. Every student has to say " here" or "present" after hearing his/her name. A method that could be used to create a positive learning environment is congratulating every student that gets the right answer to an exercise.

  17. A rule could be that the whole class needs to have taken their seats before the lesson may begin. I would start by explaining how important this is for the lesson to be effective and how not taking a seat as soon as possible may work disruptingly, along with providing the repercussions of failure to comply.
A procedure might be handing out printed material during class for which I would first explain and then demonstrate using actual printed material prepared for the day's lesson.
Finally, taking every student input into consideration during the teaching process could work positively towards creating a climate of motivation and collaboration both among students and between the students and their teacher.

  18. The rule I would establish is "It’s not enough to hear, you need to listen." This would help ensure that everyone feels respected. A poster on the wall would serve as a constant reminder.
The procedure I would implement is maintaining a clean and organized classroom. A poster outlining the rules students need to follow would also be displayed.
To foster a positive and motivating classroom environment, I would use positive reinforcement.

  19. One rule I would establish would be turn taking(e.g raising hands) and respecting each other, by explaining and analyzing the rule and the purpose of it. Also, posters and diagrams as visuals to be remembered by the Ss would be used to implement procedures such as bringing homework and keep the class organized and clean. Lastly, to create a positive and motivational classroom environment, I would incorporate different learning styles to promote inclussiveness and equality and to help all students stick with the work done in class.

  20. - everyone needs to respect everyone who is speaking and don't interrupt other people, to precent headaches and chaos. I would try to explain the negative consequences of this, peacefully.
    - ogive an overview of what we learned and answer questions, consistently, in each lesson. This is to show that the priority is learning
    - a method to break the ice and solve questions, creating a healthy environment in class, is through art. In the beginning of each lesson, a student would choose their favourite song to be played for everyone to hear. Through this, they could connect through music and common habits.
